Kevin Frandsen: a Jack of all “Trades”
Earlier this year, in what was undoubtedly an arduous decision making process, Kevin Frandsen decided to decline an assignment to the minors from the Phillies. Though risky, this move didn’t waste time paying him back; he signed with the Washington Nationals the day after electing to be a free agent. So what can the Nationals expect from their recent acquisition? Arguably, Frandsen’s chameleon-like ability to play a variety of positions will be his best attribute.
Frandsen’s versatility is unarguable. He has played six positions (first, second, and third base, shortstop, left and right field) and is a career .259 hitter*. Frandsen’s ability to wear so many hats means that he’s frequently the go-to-guy for coverage; it is, essentially, his job. When he played for the Giants, Kevin Frandsen filled in for Barry Bonds. Subsequently, it came as no huge surprise that he got to start Sunday against the Braves (which allowed Bryce Harper to take the night off). As if to further solidify his reputation as a true “Jack of all ‘trades’,” Frandsen is also the emergency catcher for the Washington Nationals. In addition to his outfield skills, Kevin Frandsen is also a talented batter against left-handed pitchers.
It’s not difficult to imagine the appeal of a player with Frandsen’s flexibility. The strength that he will bring to the National’s bench is worth noting. Not only does Frandsen have the skills, but he has the drive to push for victory. He’s made it clear that he’d like to win a championship ring, and rightfully so. Frandsen has narrowly missed being a part of the playoffs with the Giants, Angels, and Phillies. That hunger for victory is innate; it can’t be taught or bought.
Is Kevin Frandsen going to be at the top of anybody’s fantasy draft picks? Likely not, but fantasy isn’t reality. In the real world, Frandsen is a solid, well-rounded player with an obvious devotion to his craft. The Nationals made a smart move incorporating him into their roster, and it will be interesting to see what he can bring to the “plate” this season.
Julia Randall is currently stealing home. When she’s not monitoring her fantasy draft picks, you can find her waiting for summer and falling in love with her new Traeger.
