What other sports podcasts are out there?
I have to say that I’m a little behind on listening to my podcasts. I’ve got 96 in the queue currently. I have mostly kept up with the sports shows though, since I’m writing so often about it. Here are some notes about other podcasts you can listen to besides Sportazine’s own This Is Not TINAP:
This is really a must for any football fan that is interested in listening to a podcast. It can be on the long side, but it’s well worth it.
For a while, Football Weekly was off my list, but the show is great. Who Ate All The Pies agrees (at least with the last part). If not for Wendy’s interest in DC United and my desire to have things to say to her about DC United, I probably would have kept this instead of listening to all of the MLS shows. We’ll see if I keep it once I am back to school in late August.
MLS Shows (to help with your weekly fantasy team!)
Actually, this is the only podcast on the list that is purely MLS. The other three cover USMNT news as well and even some other stuff. Every now and again Filibuster talks about the Richmond Kickers, DC United’s affiliate team, but that’s still basically about DC United. If you didn’t figure it out from the name and the last sentence, this podcast only deals with DC United, my local club.
One of the official podcasts from MLSsoccer.com. There are four in total. I haven’t listened to the others.
Is it the best? Well, it’s probably the best MLS call-in show. As far as I’m aware, it’s the only MLS call-in show.
Personally, I think if I had to give up one show it would be The Best Soccer Show and not The Total Soccer Show (TTSS). Maybe that’s just because TTSS is shorter. Maybe it’s because it’s based in Richmond, which means they talk about the DC United affiliate Richmond Kickers some and DC United some.
Shows I no longer have time for, but are worth checking out:
I loved the short format of this show, but sadly I don’t have to keep up with Japan.
I’m not exactly sure they do anything other than EPL talk over at World Soccer Talk, but hey, it was a good show when I was listening to it.
A lot of great content here, particularly if you want to get, um, beyond the pitch.
When I was listening to this podcast, I was not as into the MLS as I am now. Sadly, it is no more. I haven’t listened to it since it became World Soccer Talk.
This is another that didn’t stay long in the feed. At the time, Alan Green was hosting, but it looks like Darren Fletcher is hosting now, so maybe it’s better.
- ESPN Soccernet (rebranded as ESPN FC)
Dan Mason, the emcee of this podcast, is amazing. I remember long ago I asked him about covering the Allsvenskan more, and he responded right away. They didn’t start covering Allsvenskan, but I didn’t expect them to. May this be a lesson for all you podcasters out there. Anyway, as I go “to print”, I haven’t heard back from the producer of the show about my newest question. There appears to only be an iTunes feed for the show these days. Once I hear back, I’ll update the post with the link.
This is an interesting idea for a show and one we might incorporate into TINT, since I’m a United supporter and there are at least two LFC supports in the mix for the TINT team.
I didn’t listen to this one for long. I was looking for MLS podcasts when I decided I was going to do some MLS coverage this summer. It’s not a bad show, the others are more for me.
Yep, I listened to a Swedish hockey podcast. I was learning Swedish at the time.
I also listened to a Swedish football show. After I realized it was going to be a long time before I traveled back to Sweden, I think I gave up both of the shows.
- BBC Radio’s Scottish Football
Maybe this will surprise Kevie, but yes, people outside of Scotland do care. There are a ton of ethnically Irish people that follow Celtic FC. I’m nominally one of them, though my hair and eyes come from Cherokee Nation, not Ireland.
This is quite possibly the best football podcast other than the BBC’s World Football Phone-in. Sadly it appears to have mysteriously ended without a goodbye.
If I thought about it longer, I might come up with more, but that’s a pretty good list for you!
Maybe It’ll Work Again?
Even though they haven’t published since February 1, I still have the Sky Sports Transfer Center in my feed. I don’t see a lot of reason to get rid of it. If someone knows that they have changed their feed, please let me know.
Just picked up
While writing this article, I realized maybe there were some short shows out there I should check out. I just added to my feed:
At first glance, it looks like they haven’t released since Sept 30, 2012, but their episode numbering doesn’t conform with the dates. Episode 12 comes before 1, 2, 3 & 4, which makes me think maybe the feed is just junked up and there will be new content when the season starts back. I’m not a Spurs fan, but they seem to be keeping it short (even if well over a minute) so it might be a could way for me to keep track of Clint Dempsey.
I have a feeling this one might be a keeper. Grant Wahl is great, at least as a writer and on twitter. I’ve downloaded two shows and one is half an hour and the other is 20 minutes, so there’s hope that I can keep it.
If anybody has suggestions for short sports podcasts, please let me know!
