Dutch rout Spain 5-1 in 2010 final rematch
A result that will send shockwaves throughout the rest of the tournament. Who saw that coming? No one. Well, Louis van Gaal probably did. But no one else. I can’t believe what we’ve just seen. The world champions have been battered beyond all recognition by a Holland team that not many people were willing to back tonight. What a performance from Holland – Van Persie, Blind and Robben were all superb and Spain’s high line was destroyed.
Iniesta had a great pass to the wide open David SIlva who took it to the keeper Clllessen. Silva tried to flick the ball over the keeper but with a great reaction save Cillessen tip the ball out of bounds for a corner.
After a couple chances from the Netherlands in the first 43 minutes, they finally got on board and seems to get their groove back into the game at the 44th minute. It was from Daley Blind who had an amazing cross into the box to a wide open Robin Van Persie, who had a diving header in the top corner over Iker Casillas. Easily one of the best goals we will see at the World Cup this year.
Going into the half the momentum had to be on the Dutch’s side. At the 53rd minute, another great pass from Daley Blind from the left side crossed into the box to Arjen Robben who put it down with an amazing touch, put the ball on his left foot and scored the goal with Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique diving and hoping to block the shot, but had no such luck. Only 11 minutes later in the 64th minute, Spain gives up a free kick that was unneeded but nevertheless gave it up. Around the 30 yard outside of the box,
Wesley Sneijder crosses it into the box with Van Persie trying to head it in but goes over him and straight to Stefan de Vriji who scores his first international goal against the best team in the world from FIFA rankings.
With a simple pass back from Sergio Ramos to the Spain number one Casillas, Casillas has an ungodly bad first touch with Van Persie coming in for the 5050 tackle winning the battle and tapping in his second goal of the match. Everyone saying that Van Persie can’t play on this level is surely saying otherwise after this great game.
Again Spain just pretty much is giving the ball away at this point which basically gave the ball to Wesley Sneijder who gives the aging but has great speed Arjen Robben the ball in a oneone battle with Sergio Ramos with Robben winning. Gets the ball from Casillas who came out to save the ball but Robben backs out and does a spin move and finishes it in the top corner with his second one of the match. This is truly an embarrassing scene from
Spain who many hoped would come out firing against Holland and through the tournament. We will see what happens with Spain in the next match, but for today Holland showed that they come to fight for what they think is theres, and thats a World Cup.
