Doug’s Take on the Round of 16 Match-ups and Beyond
On the top of the bracket, Brazil and Colombia I had through to the quarterfinals, so being wrong on where Chile and Uruguay would end up won’t cost me that much, if I’m correct. I had Ecuador topping their group and making it to the quarterfinals. I just wasn’t sold on France or Switzerland. Plus, I didn’t realize how reliant Ecuador was on altitude. Still I had Germany and Brazil going to the semi-finals, so I’m not too dead on that side of the bracket.

Things are a bit dicier on the bottom of the bracket. I still have my eventual winner, Argentina, coming from that side of the bracket. Much like Spain in 2010, they haven’t looked great in the group stage. However, they have gotten the job done. I picked the US over Belgium in this game to start with and I’m sticking to it. Belgium is better than Portugal, but the US was a fluke goal and a last minute melt down away from a 2-0 win over Portugal. I know the math is not that simple, but work with me.
I had Greece finishing second in their group, so no surprise there. Costa Rica on the other hand is a huge surprise. Neither of these teams has the historical pedigree, but I’m going to take Costa Rica in the tropical Recife.
While Mexico has been good, aside from a spell against Australia, Netherlands have been fantastic. Maybe Ochoa can deliver another excellent performance, but I think Netherlands just has too much quality. This sets up a date with Costa Rica and while Costa Rica was better than Mexico in the Hex, I still don’t think Costa Rica is as good as Mexico. If Netherlands get past Mexico, they’ll get past Costa Rica.
There could be a lot of goals in the Netherlands/Argentina match. I picked my World Cup winner to have 15 goals. Argentina is currently sitting at 6, or 2 per game, with four more games to go. 6 + 8 = 14, plus let’s ad in an extra time goal somewhere. Bam. 15.
I’ll be back after the Round of 16 to either say “I told you so” or to eat crow!
