Growing up, the name Larry Bird was one of those sports figures you just knew about – even if you didn’t play basketball. Playing the Dr. J vs. Larry Bird on the Atari was always fun. Of course, those days are behind him as a player, so he switched gears. He was a coach for the Celtics until 2003, when he became president of the Indiana Pacers

Reports are saying that Bird is to meet with owner Herb Simon to depart from the position. He is having some health issues and wants to take a year off before possibly coming back to the sport.

There are reports that former CEO Donnie Walsh is expected to return. Walsh – who took a year off himself – was president of the New York Knicks since 2008.

Of course, we wish Larry Bird (who is now 55) the speediest of recoveries from his personal issues. His three-year plan brought the Pacers to the playoffs in 2011.
